Urban Renewal

EXHIBIT OPEN June 16, 2023 – May 11, 2024

In the late 1940s, urban renewal began as cities faced decline in their downtown business districts and neighborhoods. More people moved to the suburbs, which caused downtowns to struggle. Muskegon was no exception.

Learn about Muskegon’s own urban renewal experience in the 1960s and 1970s, the decline of the Muskegon Mall, and the redevelopment underway today. Stroll down 1960s Western Avenue, visit the mall, and explore visions for the future of downtown Muskegon.
