Farms & Farming

The fertile soil in the area is good for growing many crops. There are farms of wheat, hay, and corn, blueberry fields, and fruit trees. This exhibit features two crops for which Muskegon is known as the largest producer in the U.S., celery (in the 1950s) and pickles from the Swanson Pickle Company (today). As the demand for celery declined, many of the celery farms with their greenhouses, like Weesies Brothers, transitioned to home and garden centers and MasterTag became the world’s largest producer of plant identification tags.
