Historic Sites Programming by Appointment

The Hackley and Hume Historic Sites offer programming by appointment to accommodate your group’s needs, whether during or outside of business hours. Admission minimums apply to groups under 10 people, and for the Grounds Tour for groups under 5 people. An additional $50 fee applies to tours outside of business hours. Ask about our member and non-profit pricing!

Hackley and Hume Houses Classic Tour

Visit the Queen Anne-style Victorian houses of Muskegon lumber barons Charles Hackley and Thomas Hume. The Hackley House, interpreted to 1890, shows what life was like for one of Muskegon’s most well-known philanthropists. The Hume House, interpreted to 1920, shows the life of a wealthy family after the lumbering era. Each home features incredible woodwork, elaborate stained glass, and original family furnishings.

Fire Barn Museum and Scolnik House of the Depression Era Tour 

The Fire Barn is a replica building based on fire barns of the 19th century and tells the history of firefighting in Muskegon while showcasing antique firefighting equipment. The Scolnik House is a gentle-touch house museum, allowing visitors to experience what life was like for many families during the Great Depression.

Grounds Tours

This guided grounds tour offers a unique look at the Historic Sites. Learn more about Queen Anne style architecture, the site’s construction, the functions of the City Barn, and how the exterior of each building has changed through the years. Also, hear stories about the families, their pets, and the unique structures that once existed on the property.

After Dark Tour 

Join us on this unique version of our classic tour and learn more about the lumbering business, the Hackley and Hume families, and the Victorian Era in Muskegon. Gather your friends or family and make your visit AFTER DARK!

All Access Tour

This extended tour reveals attics, basements, porches, and all the spaces that the classic tour does not include! Enjoy this exclusive experience while hearing about new research discoveries, restoration projects, and fun family Hackley and Hume stories.

Hackley Attic Escape Room 

Experience the Hackley House as you never have before! For many years, the Hackley Attic has been a mysterious place for visitors. Now it is up to you and your closest friends to escape a Victorian storage room filled with puzzles, locks, and riddles. Brush up on your Muskegon history and escape the attic in time!

Flashlight Tour

Perfect for a unique group outing, this interactive tour allows visitors to explore the Hackley and Hume Houses in a completely new light. On this guided tour, your group will make its way through the site as you illuminate the objects you want to know more about. Your guide will also share fun, quirky, and creepy facts along the way!

Beyond the Swinging Door: Servant’s Tour

Experience the life of the maids, cooks, and coachmen at the Hackley & Hume Historic Site on this specialty tour. Explore the site through the eyes of the paid servants that worked and lived with the Hackleys & Humes. This tour concentrates on entering/exiting the backdoors, basements, kitchens, and bedrooms where the daily work took place. Along with information about the family dynamics and social expectations of the late 1800s.

Obituary Tour 

On this exclusive tour, travel back in time to explore the deaths, funerals, and autopsies that occurred in the Hackley and Hume Houses. Become immersed in the practices and traditions of death and dying in the Victorian Era.

Holiday Tours

Experience the Hackley and Hume Houses this holiday season! A tradition since 1972, our Holiday Tours show off these amazing homes adorned with seasonal decorations provided by a multitude of community partners. Learn about the Hackley and Hume families and the origins of many holiday traditions while voting for the best-decorated room along the way.
