Gettysburg Lecture Series – Museum Center

October 3, 2016 @ 6:00 pm - 8:00 pm

Join us on a voyage of discovery in The Literature, Art and History of Gettysburg and the Civil War.  This special series of four lectures will be presented on Monday evenings from September 12th-October 3rd at the Lakeshore Museum Center by Muskegon Community College Literature Instructor Michael Johnson, Art Instructor Tim Norris and History Instructors Kurt Troutman and George Maniates.

Lecture Night Four:

The Advance of Freedom through the Artists who were there: Who arrived on the battlefield to claim credit as the first artist to document the carnage- even pausing to sketch a map of the first day’s fight as it progressed?  Who then managed to scoop this artist by getting his own illustrations printed in a major newspaper first? Who was the photographer to make the significant leap from battlefield photojournalism to the creation of a masterpiece of fine art?  How did he do it?

Lincoln’s Gettysburg Address & the Legacy of the American Civil War. A tribute to those who died at Gettysburg would not die in vain. Lincoln’s promise of a New Birth of Freedom.
