Title: Part Time Exhibits Technician

Department: Exhibits and Collections

Pay Rate: $15.00 hourly

Status: Part-Time, Non-Exempt

Benefits: Prorated vacation, sick leave, and holidays

Reports to: Exhibits Manager and Designer

Hours and Schedule: Monday-Friday, 20 hours/week. Occasional weekends and evenings as needed.

About this Position: The Part Time Exhibits Technician maintains the look and function of existing exhibits and assists in the creation of new exhibits across all the museum’s sites. A successful candidate will possess a high attention to detail and contribute a positive mental attitude to the production team and the work.

Qualifications:

• High School diploma or equivalent.

• Possess great attention to detail and is a self-starter.

• Ability to problem solve, complete tasks, perform routine repairs, and think creatively.

• Understand the use of power tools and basic fabrication materials.

• Ability to work independently and efficiently, plus be productive in a team environment.

• Ability to handle multiple tasks at once and know when to ask questions and accept guidance as needed.

• Must have basic computer skills. Knowledge of design software is a plus.

Occasionally moves materials and equipment up to 50 lbs. and ascends, descends, and works on ladders.

• Clean driving record. Valid driver’s license is required.

• Experience working with museum exhibits, displays, or set design is preferred.

Primary Responsibilities:

• Perform exhibit inspections throughout each workday and perform routine maintenance according to priority.

• Monitor and document issues in the Exhibits Repair Log. Address concerns according to priority.

• Work with the Exhibits and Maintenance staff to fabricate, construct, and install new elements and exhibits.

• Fabricate durable and quality display mounts, exhibit structures, and elements from design sketches.

• Work on each project to meet deadlines on time, on budget and done well.

• Participate in regular cleaning of exhibit galleries.

• Assists in obtaining cost estimates for materials and projects.

• Mount and trim labels, signs, and other graphics.

General Responsibilities

• Produce a monthly report of activities to the Exhibits Manager.

Keep work areas and equipment clean and organized.

• Attend team, department, and exhibits committee meetings.

• Work with volunteers and interns.

• Assist with museum projects, programs, special events and perform other duties as assigned.

Continuously work with the exhibits team to efficiently use storage space as needs evolve and change.

TITLE: Historic Sites Program Assistant

DEPARTMENT: Historic Sites

REPORTS TO: Historic Sites Manager

STATUS: Full Time/Non Exempt

SUPERVISES: No Direct Reports-point person to Manager on Weekends

SALARY: $35,600

Lakeshore Museum Center Mission: The Mission of the Lakeshore Museum Center is to tell the story of Muskegon County by collecting, preserving, and interpreting the history of its people and natural environment.

Position Summary: This position assists in the programming and curatorial responsibilities at the Lakeshore Museum Center’s Historic Sites. The Historic Sites Program Assistant is responsible for assisting in programs for a wide variety of audiences including schools, tourists, and the public. This position is not a supervisory position, but is the point person weekends or when the Manager/Director are not on site.

Responsibilities:

Administration:

  • Produce monthly reports for supervisor.
  • Write articles for LMC’s newsletter.
  • Attend staff meetings, department meetings, and supervisor meetings.
  • Assist with training materials for the Historic Sites.
  • Inputting visitor tracking and reporting numbers to Site Manager.

Weekend Point Person:

  • Weekend point person for Staff Members and volunteers/interns on weekends, and at the end of the day, when the Manager/Director are not on site.

Program Development & Implementation:

  • Assist in program development, planning, and implementation that serves a variety of audiences, such as school, tourists, and local visitors utilizing the five historic buildings.
  • Responsible updating program timelines and checklists for all the programs/events
  • Assist in orientation training for new Interpretive Staff and Volunteers/Interns.
  • Help lead school, big lesson, and group tours, along with programs by appointment in the off-season and when needed within the season.
  • Scheduling school/group tours.
  • Manage Zeffy ticketing for paid programming/events.
  • Assist with Event Worksheets for marketing.

Site Curation

  • Assist in site annual deep cleaning and resetting for the season.
  • Monitor site security and report potential or real problems to Site Director/Manager.
  • Keep humidifiers running and clean each season.

Qualifications & Education:

  • Bachelor’s degree preferred.
  • Creative, strategic thinker with proven project management skills.
  • Detail Orientated.
  • Good written/oral communication
  • Strong organizational skills, multi-tasking, and problem-solving qualities.
  • Responsible, reliable, and able to use good judgment.
  • Friendly, courteous, empathetic, and engaging presence with all visitors, staff, and volunteers.
  • Strong work ethic.
  • Cooperative in nature, able to work well within a team structure.

Physical Demands:

  • Ascends and descends stairs regularly when providing tours.
  • 50 lb. weight limit.

About the Muskegon Historic Sites: The Muskegon Historic Sites is a branch of the Lakeshore Museum Center that focuses on interpreting the Muskegon’s history through guided tours and gentle touch museum. The Historic Sites includes the Hackley and Hume Historic Site, the Fire Barn Museum, and the Scolnik House of the Depression Era.
