It outlines a slave’s dual path to freedom: emancipation and military service. Kurt is an instructor of political science and history\, and he has earned degrees from Saginaw Valley State University\, the University of Colorado and the American Military University. Over a dozen local actors from Muskegon Civic Theatre and volunteers will be stationed at the stops along the half mile trail creating a historic haunted atmosphere. SUMMARY:Youth History Camp at Michigan's Heritage Park
DESCRIPTION:Youth 7 to 12 years old have an opportunity to become immersed in the world of living history during a week-long camp this summer at Michigan’s Heritage Park in Whitehall. Campers will explore the daily lives of some of Michigan’s earliest residents as they practice prehistoric spear throwing at the Atlatl course and learn how to survive on limited resources as an early settler. They will learn about the lives of lumberjacks at the Logging Shanty and will create their own log mark.  \nThe camp will be held from 9:00 am to 4:30 pm. Campers will need to bring a sack lunch and snack. The cost of the week-long camp is $120 for Museum members and $150 for non-members. Six scholarships are available for youth who live in Whitehall and Montague.  \nThe camp registration form\, medical consent form\, and scholarship application can be found on the Museum website under the Program tab.

DESCRIPTION:Visitors are invited to walk along the trail through the park with their leashed\, social dogs and learn about the roles of pets during different times is history. \nVolunteers from the Muskegon Humane Society will be on hand with adoptable dogs from the shelter that visitors can meet. The volunteers will share information about the shelter’s adoption process and will be on hand all day. \nA team from Blessed Dogs LLC will also be on hand. From Noon to 2 pm\, they will offer an AKC Canine Good Citizen and AKC Community Canine Test for $5 for visiting dogs. \nFree dog biscuits will be provide courtesy of Oceana Veterinary Clinic. Water dishes will be available throughout the park. All dogs must be leashed and owners must clean up after their canine friends. \nAll dogs must be leashed\, water stations will be provided\, and pet owners must clean up after their dogs. \n  \n

The men and women of the Michigan Third are as authentic as possible in their dress and manner as they portray what life was like during the Civil War for the military and civilians. They will set up camp for the weekend which visitors may tour to meet the reenactors. This year\, they will be joined by members of the 9th Kentucky Co. C\, a volunteer Confederate Infantry Unit.  Each day\, a drill and battle will be held in Activity Field at the center of the park. \nOn Sunday\, there will be a Church Service in the pavilion. The Dodworth Duo will serenade attendees through the park groups both days. They perform songs of soldiers and civilians during the Civil War\, folk melodies\, and popular ballads of the time. Author Erica Emelander\, who wrote the book “Though War Shall Rise Against Me” under the name Marie LaPres\, will speak at 1:00 pm both days. Her book tells the story of 20 year old Jennie Wade and her three friends who lived in Gettysburg when the battle occurred.  \nAdmission for this special event weekend is $12 for adults and teens\, $10 for 65 and older\, and $7 for 12 and younger.
