DESCRIPTION:“Muskegon Lake as a NOAA Habitat Focus Area” – Terry Heatlie\, NOAA Affiliate \nMr. Heatlie’s talk will look at the work done on Muskegon Lake as a Habitat Focus Area\, and what it might mean for the future of the Muskegon Lake Area of Concern. \nThis lecture series is presented in conjunction with the Shifting Shoreline exhibit. This is a free series. \nPresenter Bio:\nMr. Heatlie has almost 31 years of experience in ecological resource assessment\, fish and wildlife impact assessments in both aquatic and terrestrial ecosystems\, monitoring\, planning\, permitting\, NEPA compliance and Natural Resource Damage Assessment (NRDA). Specific experience includes federal grant review; wetland delineation; natural features inventories; site planning and selection; permit negotiation; site selection and monitoring of wetland mitigation\, restoration and creation projects for successful completion; aquatic invertebrate sampling in wetlands and streams; tree surveys and oil spill rapid assessment. SUMMARY:Spring Break Open House
DESCRIPTION:Join us for our annual Spring Break Open House from 11am to 1pm on Wednesday\, April 5th.  In addition to our fun hands-on exhibits\, we will have extra activities set-up throughout the museum.  Activities will include: “Egg-periments” (science demonstrations using eggs!)\, a Spring River Drive activity focused on the lumbering tradition of putting the logs in the river after the snow has melted\, and a “Reclaimed Rubber Band Art” Make and Take for $3. For this Make & Take children (or adults) will choose a piece of late-1800s lumber reclaimed from Muskegon Lake and will use nails and rubber bands to create a visual masterpiece!

DESCRIPTION:“Contaminated Sediments: A Path to Restoration” – Dr. Richard Rediske\, Professor\, Annis Water Resources Institute \nThe presentation will cover the historical sources of sediment contamination in Muskegon Lake and the work local\, state\, and federal partners lead to the removal significant sources. The current status of sediment contamination will be discussed along with the necessary actions to complete the restoration process. \nPresenter Bio:\nDr. Richard Rediske is a Professor of Water Resources at Grand Valley State University’s Annis Water Resources Institute (AWRI). He has a Ph.D. from University of Michigan in Environmental Chemistry and has conducted environmental research at AWRI for over 20 years. His research areas include environmental chemical fate and transport\, aquatic toxicology\, water quality management\, ecosystem restoration. Prior to joining AWRI\, Dr. Rediske was the Director of Environmental Services for local environmental consulting firms including WW Engineering and Science and Earth Tech. \nThis lecture series is presented in conjunction with the Shifting Shoreline exhibit. SUMMARY:Spinning Meet Up
DESCRIPTION:Spinners and other fiber artists are invited to join the staff from Michigan’s Heritage Park for a Spinning Meet Up at Unruly Brewing.  Since last fall\, park staff members have met at various locations throughout the county to practice their spinning skills and share information about spinning with the public. They use a number of spinning techniques including drop spindles\, a walking wheel\, and traditional treadle wheel. Not only is it an opportunity to learn about the art of spinning\, it is also a chance for people to work on other projects such as knitting\, crocheting or quilting in a relaxed group environment.

DESCRIPTION:The Lakeshore Museum Center and YMCA are collaborating on a new free after-school program for third\, fourth\, and fifth grade students. Participants will get up and moving in the Body Works Exhibit and learn about health and nutrition in a fun way. The six-week program begins on March 9 and continues each Thursday through April 20. (The program will not be held on April 6). SUMMARY:Shifting Shoreline Lecture Series-Museum Center
DESCRIPTION:“The Long Term Muskegon Lake Monitoring Program” – Dr. Alan Steinman\, Director\, Annis Water Resources Institute \nDr. Steinman’s lecture will cover the four main goals of the Muskegon Lake Monitoring Program\, which was initiated in 2003.  He will discuss the data and findings the monitoring program has produced. \nThis lecture series is presented in conjunction with the Shifting Shoreline exhibit. Each lecture begins at 6:00 pm. Call 722-0278 to reserve your seat. This is a free series. \nPresenter Bio: \nAlan (Al) Steinman has been Director of Grand Valley State University’s Annis Water Resources Institute since 2001.  Previously\, he was Director of the Lake Okeechobee Restoration Program at the South Florida Water Management District. Steinman has published over 150 scientific articles and book chapters\, has been awarded over $50 million in grants for scientific and engineering projects\, and has testified before the U.S. Congress and the Michigan and Florida state legislatures. \nCurrently Steinman is a member of science advisory boards for the U.S. EPA\, the International Joint Commission\, Michigan DEQ\, Sea Grant\, Healing our Waters\, University of Michigan’s Water Center\, the Cooperative Institute for Limnology and Ecosystems Research\, and the National Estuarine Research Reserve System.  He currently serves as Associate Editor for Freshwater Biology. He also has served on the State of Michigan’s Groundwater Conservation Advisory Council and Phosphorus Advisory Committees. SUMMARY:Michigan's Heritage Park Opens for the Season
DESCRIPTION:Michigan’s Heritage Park in Whitehall is now open for the 2017 season. Explore 10\,000 years of Michigan history in a natural woodland setting. Walk along a paved half-mile trail and meet costumed interpreters and learn about life in early Michigan.  During May and October\, the park is open Monday – Friday from 10:00 am to 4:00 pm. Park hours in June through September are Thursday through Monday from 10:00 am to 4:00 pm and Sundays\, from 1:00 pm to 4:00 pm. SUMMARY:Chapters of Muskegon Literacy Event
DESCRIPTION:This free family event will allow participants to engage in scavenger hunts\, crafts\, games\, and more at the historic sites of the Lakeshore Museum Center. At the Hackley & Hume Historic Site\, information about architecture and local history will be presented. At The Fire Barn\, participants will learn about the changes in technology over time\, and at the Scolnik House of the Depression Era\, visitors will learn about harvesting food techniques. There will be a literacy-based make-and-take activity lead by AmericCorps and museum staff members at each of the three sites.  \nThis is a joint project of the Lakeshore Museum Center and AmeriCorps members serving with the Michigan Education Corps (MEC) Reading Corps.

SUMMARY:Bison\, Bears and Eagles Oh My!
DESCRIPTION:Families will enjoy activities related to the exhibit Edward S. Curtis: The North American Indian and Native American culture at both the Lakeshore Museum Center and Muskegon Museum of Art.  Children who complete all four activities in their booklet can enter a drawing for a gift basket.  The drawing for the basket will be held at 2:30pm. \nVisit the Lakeshore Museum Center’s Habitats Gallery to discuss bears and how they were used historically in the Native American Culture. Touch a bear fur or examine their teeth in a real bear skull! \nThe Muskegon Museum of Art will have a bison related craft in their classroom as well as a live eagle for children to view.

SUMMARY:Mother's Day Tours
DESCRIPTION:Muskegon County mothers can enjoy a FREE tour of the Hackley & Hume Historic Site in honor of Mother’s Day.  Admission for other guests is $7 for adults and teens\, $5 for 65 and older\, and free admission for 12 and younger. \nMother’s Day is a holiday honoring motherhood that is observed in different forms throughout the world. The American incarnation of Mother’s Day was created by Anna Jarvis in 1908 and became an official U.S. holiday in 1914. The holiday most commonly falls on the second Sunday in May and traditionally involves presenting mothers with flowers\, cards and other gifts.
