SUMMARY:BIG Lesson Training
DESCRIPTION:Teachers!\nHave you ever wanted more from a museum visit?  Do you wish that you could have a study trip that incorporates special activities\, behind-the-scenes tours\, experiments\, and guest speakers?  Imagine the impact that a weeklong study trip held at the Lakeshore Museum Center could have on your students for the remainder of the school year!\nThe BIG Lesson model focuses on partnerships between community resources and schools that encourage hands-on and minds-on learning for students.  It is a teacher-led\, student-centered model that uses object-based\, interdisciplinary approaches to teaching and learning.  The BIG Lesson was developed at the Michigan Historical Museum\, in Lansing Michigan in conjunction with the 1999-2000 Teacher of the Year Margaret Holtschlag. \nTo participate teachers must attend a three-day workshop held at the Lakeshore Museum Center.  During this workshop teachers will learn new ways to utilize the unique learning experience the museum provides. The workshop includes training on the BIG Lesson model\, current learning theories\, museum resources and innovative ways to learn in a museum setting.  Completion of the BIG Lesson workshop enables teachers to teach a weeklong themed study trip at the Lakeshore Museum Center and to incorporate the model into a yearlong thematic study using museum resources to meet grade level content expectations. \nApplications are due by May 13.   Accepted participants will be contacted by May 20 and the $75 payment is due no later than June 10. \nClick HERE for the application

SUMMARY:Shifting Shoreline Exhibit Opening
DESCRIPTION:Our newest exhibit\, examines the changes to the Muskegon Lake shoreline over the past 200 years. An Exhibit Opening Event will be held Tuesday\, June 21 from 4 to 8 pm with formal comments at 5:30 pm. \nAnimation and maps in the exhibit show visitors how Muskegon Lake shrunk by 27% from the time of the lumbering era to the present day. A video shows the changes to the shoreline decade by decade and a hands-on station offers visitors an opportunity to create a souvenir log mark.  This project has been made possible with support of the National Marine Sanctuary Foundation. The Shifting Shoreline Exhibit will be on display through May 2017.
