SUMMARY:Chapters of Muskegon Literacy Event
DESCRIPTION:This free family event will allow participants to engage in scavenger hunts\, crafts\, games\, and more at the historic sites of the Lakeshore Museum Center. At the Hackley & Hume Historic Site\, information about architecture and local history will be presented. At The Fire Barn\, participants will learn about the changes in technology over time\, and at the Scolnik House of the Depression Era\, visitors will learn about harvesting food techniques. There will be a literacy-based make-and-take activity lead by AmericCorps and museum staff members at each of the three sites.  \nThis is a joint project of the Lakeshore Museum Center and AmeriCorps members serving with the Michigan Education Corps (MEC) Reading Corps.

DESCRIPTION:Families will enjoy activities related to the exhibit Edward S. Curtis: The North American Indian and Native American culture at both the Lakeshore Museum Center and Muskegon Museum of Art.  Children who complete all four activities in their booklet can enter a drawing for a gift basket.  The drawing for the basket will be held at 2:30pm. \nVisit the Lakeshore Museum Center’s Habitats Gallery to discuss bears and how they were used historically in the Native American Culture. Touch a bear fur or examine their teeth in a real bear skull! \nThe Muskegon Museum of Art will have a bison related craft in their classroom as well as a live eagle for children to view.

SUMMARY:Civil War Encampment
DESCRIPTION:Members of the Third Michigan Volunteer Infantry Co. F will be at the park in Whitehall on June 10 and 11 for a Civil War Encampment. The men and women of the Michigan Third are as authentic as possible in their dress and manner as they portray what life was like during the Civil War for the military and civilians. They will set up camp for the weekend which visitors may tour to meet the reenactors. This year\, they will be joined by members of the 9th Kentucky Co. C\, a volunteer Confederate Infantry Unit. Each day\, a drill and battle will be held in Activity Field at the center of the park. \nThe Dodworth Duo will serenade attendees through the park groups both days. They perform songs of soldiers and civilians during the Civil War\, folk melodies\, and popular ballads of the time. Author Erica Emelander\, who wrote the book “Though War Shall Rise Against Me” under the name Marie LaPres\, will speak at 1:00 pm both days. Her book tells the story of 20 year old Jennie Wade and her three friends who lived in Gettysburg when the battle occurred. \nFood from Bone Ends Tex Mex BBQ will be available for purchase at the event on Saturday. On Sunday\, there will be a Church Service in the pavilion at 10:30 am. \nAdmission for this special event weekend is $12 for adults and teens\, $10 for 65 and older\, and $7 for 12 and younger. DESCRIPTION:Visitors are invited to walk along the trail through the park with their leashed\, social dogs and learn about the roles of pets during different times is history. \nVolunteers from the Muskegon Humane Society will be on hand with adoptable dogs from the shelter that visitors can meet. The volunteers will share information about the shelter’s adoption process and will be on hand all day. \nA team from Blessed Dogs LLC will also be on hand. From Noon to 2 pm\, they will offer an AKC Canine Good Citizen and AKC Community Canine Test for $5 for visiting dogs. \nFree dog biscuits will be provide courtesy of Oceana Veterinary Clinic. Water dishes will be available throughout the park. All dogs must be leashed and owners must clean up after their canine friends. \nAll dogs must be leashed\, water stations will be provided\, and pet owners must clean up after their dogs. \n  \n

DESCRIPTION:Native Americans and early Michigan settlers made their own dolls from materials they had on hand such as corn husks or cloth. Park visitors can make a corn husk doll for free for the park to use\, or pay a $5.00 fee to take it home with them. \nPark admission rates apply ($10 for adults and teens\, $8 for 65 and older\, $5 for 12 and younger.
