DESCRIPTION:Join us for Civil War Weekend 2018 and get lost in the 1860s with the sights\, smells\, and sounds of one of history’s most famous conflicts. See the soldiers in their camp and learn about what their lives were like dealing with the problems and issues of camp life. Visit the civilians who followed them and learn about how the war affected life back home. \nVisitors will also have a chance to watch a battle unfold on our activity field! Plus\, games and activities and the entire park for visitors to explore! \nFreedom by the Pen and the Sword\, a talk by Kurt Troutman\, will take place at 11:00 each day. This talk is an introduction to the Emancipation Proclamation featuring President Lincoln’s historic declaration and the role of the First Michigan Colored Volunteer Infantry Regiment. It outlines a slave’s dual path to freedom: emancipation and military service. Kurt is an instructor of political science and history\, and he has earned degrees from Saginaw Valley State University\, the University of Colorado and the American Military University. DESCRIPTION:During touring season\, we are open for tours that will be starting every 20 minutes. Tours at the Hackley and Hume Historic Site usually take about an hour. The tickets are sold in the City Barn (Carriage House) at the Hackley and Hume Historic Site. DESCRIPTION:Thanks to everyone who joined us for this year’s Lumber Barons’ Ball at the Hackley Administration Building! The building was decorated in true Steampunk Fashion by Jamie and his crew from Chalet Floral and we can’t thank them enough.  Wonderful food from Ryke’s Catering and music from Modern Entertainment. We would also like to thank our host – Muskegon Public Schools; David Loring Productions for the Mission Moment we shared with our guests; and the teachers\, parents\, and youth who were a part of the video. \nOur live and silent auctions included a variety of experiences at our sites and we appreciate the support we received for museum education programs and exhibits from those who made purchases. We also had 19 generous sponsors who helped make the event possible.  Our thanks also to the generous donors who couldn’t join us and made a contribution to support the event. \nThe Steampunk theme was once again very popular with our guests who came up with some great costumes. DESCRIPTION:“The Long Term Muskegon Lake Monitoring Program” – Dr. Alan Steinman\, Director\, Annis Water Resources Institute \nDr. Steinman’s lecture will cover the four main goals of the Muskegon Lake Monitoring Program\, which was initiated in 2003.  He will discuss the data and findings the monitoring program has produced. \nThis lecture series is presented in conjunction with the Shifting Shoreline exhibit. Each lecture begins at 6:00 pm. Call 722-0278 to reserve your seat. This is a free series. \nPresenter Bio: \nAlan (Al) Steinman has been Director of Grand Valley State University’s Annis Water Resources Institute since 2001.  Previously\, he was Director of the Lake Okeechobee Restoration Program at the South Florida Water Management District. Steinman has published over 150 scientific articles and book chapters\, has been awarded over $50 million in grants for scientific and engineering projects\, and has testified before the U.S. Congress and the Michigan and Florida state legislatures. \nCurrently Steinman is a member of science advisory boards for the U.S. EPA\, the International Joint Commission\, Michigan DEQ\, Sea Grant\, Healing our Waters\, University of Michigan’s Water Center\, the Cooperative Institute for Limnology and Ecosystems Research\, and the National Estuarine Research Reserve System.  He currently serves as Associate Editor for Freshwater Biology. He also has served on the State of Michigan’s Groundwater Conservation Advisory Council and Phosphorus Advisory Committees. The current status of sediment contamination will be discussed along with the necessary actions to complete the restoration process. \nPresenter Bio:\nDr. Richard Rediske is a Professor of Water Resources at Grand Valley State University’s Annis Water Resources Institute (AWRI). He has a Ph.D. from University of Michigan in Environmental Chemistry and has conducted environmental research at AWRI for over 20 years. His research areas include environmental chemical fate and transport\, aquatic toxicology\, water quality management\, ecosystem restoration. Specific experience includes federal grant review; wetland delineation; natural features inventories; site planning and selection; permit negotiation; site selection and monitoring of wetland mitigation\, restoration and creation projects for successful completion; aquatic invertebrate sampling in wetlands and streams; tree surveys and oil spill rapid assessment. Just as use\, focus and priorities have changed over the decades\, so have efforts to measure physical and biological parameters. The suite tools available to researchers have become more sophisticated since the initial mapping of the Lake. Our current understanding of the Lake is shaped by these earlier efforts and the limitations of tools available to researchers. This presentation provides an historical overview of methods and gear deployed to measure the diverse physical and biological aspects of the Muskegon Lake. Future management of the Lake will require a holistic understanding\, supported by a new suite of field methods and tools \nThis lecture series is presented in conjunction with the Shifting Shoreline exhibit. DESCRIPTION:“Remediation\, Restoration and Revitalization of Muskegon Lake” – Kathy Evans\, West Michigan Shoreline Regional Development Commission (WMSRDC) \nThis program will present an overview of more than a decade of Muskegon Lake cleanup and restoration projects. It will discuss how community partnerships have advanced restoration and the local\, state and federal programs that have supported water quality and natural resources improvements. \nPresenter Bio:\nKathy Evans is the Environmental Program Manager at the WMSRDC. The WMSRDC is a regional planning agency with programs in economic development\, transportation planning\, environmental planning\, local government services and homeland security. The Environmental Program focuses on water quality and natural resources improvements\, and includes strong community involvement and sustainability components. Kathy has worked in the conservation and natural resources field since the early 1990’s. For the past nine years\, Kathy and the WMSRDC environmental program has managed extensive restoration projects to improve fish and wildlife habitat along the Muskegon Lake shoreline and its tributaries. \nThis lecture series is presented in conjunction with the Shifting Shoreline exhibit. DESCRIPTION:Victorian Carnivale is the theme of this year’s event which we’re billing as “The Event of the Year”.  Imagine a night under the big top in Muskegon in the early 1900s with interactive entertainment\, music\, and more. Performers from the Bangarang Circus will put on a special show with a Fire Act as the Grand Finale!  The night includes a live and silent auction\, Five Fantastic Food Stations and a cash bar.  Themed attire suggested. SUMMARY:Muskegon Lake History & Restoration Boat Tour
DESCRIPTION:The Lakeshore Museum Center is partnering with Grand Valley State University’s Annis Water Resources Institute (AWRI) to present a unique boat tour of Muskegon Lake. This tour\, aboard the W.G Jackson\, will highlight several sites around Muskegon Lake including Ruddiman Creek\, the former grounds of the Lakey foundry\, the  MERES preserve\, and the former site of Pigeon Hill. At each stop AWRI will discuss the work they are doing to help  restore the lake\, and the museum will talk about the historical use of the shoreline. \nThis tour will last approximately two hours\, and participants must be able to stand for the duration. The price is $10 per person and this tour is intended for adults and children 7 or older. \nCan’t make the date?
