SUMMARY:"Sojourners and the Single Girl" at Heritage Park
DESCRIPTION:Join us as we welcome local historian Marjorie Viveen. She will be sharing a presentation about West Michigan fur trader\, Rix Robinson\, and his fur trade crew of 1830. The license he secured for his trading granted him rights on the “Grand River and Vicinity” and he employed one woman and 21 men at posts scattered from Little Travers Bay to St. Joseph. This event takes a close look at one of our local fur trading outfits and promises to be very informative.  Register via PayPal below or call 231-894-0342 to reserve your spot today. \nThe cost is $6 for members and $8 for non-member.  Sign up for all three sessions of the series at once for $15 for Members $21 non-members. Coffee\, tea\, and water provided. \n\n \n\n\n\nSojourners and the Single Girl\n\n\nNon-Member $8.00 USDMember $6.00 USDSeries Non-Member $21.00 USDSeries Member $15.00 USD\n\n\nPhone Number:

SUMMARY:Images of America: Muskegon Book Talk & Signing
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a book talk and signing with Norma Lewis and Christine Nyholm\, authors of Images of America: Muskegon. Have your book signed before or after the presentation in the museum auditorium at 5:30pm. \nBooks will be available for purchase in the Museum Store. \nRegistration not required\, seating for talk at 5:30 will be first come\, first served. \n  \nBook Synopsis: Ottawa and Pottawatomi Indians called Muskegon home at least 200 years before Jean Baptiste Recollect opened his trading post in 1836. Michigan’s abundant forests created the logging industry. Lumber mills flourished as the Muskegon River and Lake Michigan provided easy transport. The city was called the Lumber Queen\, and it was said that Muskegon lumber built Chicago. The lumber barons’ influence is still felt. Charles Hackley’s name graces a major street\, park\, library\, and hospital\, and the local hockey team is called the Lumberjacks. Shipping followed\, with Brunswick\, Sealed Power\, and Continental Motors among the industrial heavyweights. Residents have also appreciated cultural pursuits. The famed Actors’ Colony\, founded by the Keaton family\, is where Buster honed his vaudeville skills before hitting the big time. Max Gruber’s Oddities of the Jungle act featured an elephant that rode a tricycle and bowled. Former area residents include M*A*S*H star Harry Morgan\, astronaut David Leetsma\, two Miss Americas\, singers Iggy Pop and Wayne Static\, and sports greats Earl Morrall\, Bobby Grich\, and Nate McLouth. Snowboarding began here but was called “snurfing” (snow surfing).

SUMMARY:Void of Color: Black Holes
DESCRIPTION:Join us for the second in a series of three lectures that will bring our Collection by Color exhibit to life with various social and science topics.  Doctor Geoffrey Lenters a Physicist at Grand Valley University and former National Research fellow at NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center will be discussing Black Holes. Learn of their origins and new information discovered about them. \nFree for Muskegon County residents and museum members. Just $3 for non-residents. \nReserve your seat by calling 231.722.0278 or emailing jackie@lakeshoremuseum.org. \n  \nSpeaker Bio: \nGeoffrey Lenters attended Calvin College\, where he received his B.S. in physics and continued his education at the University of Alabama in Huntsville. In May of 1999\, Geoff successfully defended his Ph.D. dissertation in which he developed computer models of electron acceleration in impulsive solar flares. His research in astrophysics continued at NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center under a National Research Council Fellowship where he expanded his computational modeling to include modeling satellite response for upcoming Solar Physics missions. His teaching career began at Hope College in the Fall of 2000\, moved to Calvin College in Fall of 2002\, and culminated in a position at Grand Valley State University in Fall of 2003\, where he is currently a Professor in the Department of Physics. During his teaching career\, he closely collaborated with astrophysicists at NASA’s National Space Science and Technology Center\, analyzing X-ray emissions from a relatively new (1987) class of neutron stars called Soft Gamma Repeaters (SGRs). Geoff has also used his computational skills working in the missile defense industry for a year-long sabbatical project. \nCurrently\, he is dabbling in the experimental investigation of microwave-induced plasma discharges and other microwave induced phenomena. More than his scientific work\, Geoff’s pride and joy are his wife and three children\, one of whom is attending Grand Valley State University\, and the other two still in high school
